Siroua Mountains

Source of our Wool - 3 days

Join us on a spectacular trip to the Siroua Mountains, a remote and unspoilt region on the eastern flanks of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. It is home to the unique and rare Siroua breed and the source of our premium wool. Reared in the practice of transhumance, nomads shepherd these flocks along ancient routes to the upper verdant plateaus of Siroua.

The trip to this region takes us from Marrakech and across the High Atlas Mountain pass of Tizi n’Tichka. We then climb the rugged slopes of the Siroua mountains before arriving at our village. That afternoon we visit a natural dye studio, one of only three in Morocco, to see the master dyers at work. This is followed by a walking tour of the village to visit some of the homes where women artisans work on the loom weaving rugs in the same manner as their anscestors have done for centuries.

The next day we head further up into the mountains to hike through magnificent landscapes and observe the Siroua breed grazing in their natural habitat. A picnic lunch is served surrounded by towering volcanic rocks followed by a visit to more village settlements on the Siroua plateaus.

On our last day and we head to the town of Taznakht, the heart of Morocco’s rug weaving industry. We will spend the morning visiting artisans weaving traditional killim rugs, spend time at another natural dye studio headed by one of Morocco’s rare master weavers and enjoy a couscous at his family home.

The return trip takes us back across the High Atlas Mountains with the option of stopping at the UNESCO world heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou.
